Saint George and the Dragon (1963)—This retelling of Spenser’s classic offered hints at the remarkably broad scope of the young author’s work. This book grew out of Stoddard’s effort to complete her college degree more than a decade (and three children) after leaving Bryn Mawr early. The resulting book featured exquisite line drawings by Pauline Baynes and, apparently effortlessly, recast the Olde English poetry of the original into still-rhyming modern English. Another winner of multiple awards, including Book of the Year from the American Library Association.
