The Thinking Book (1960)—This dream-like tour through a child’s imagination was Sandol Stoddard’s first published work. An exploration of the interior landscape, enriched by Ivan Chermayeff’s extraordinary illustrations, it won wide recognition as one of the year’s best from the New Yorker magazine and the New York Herald Tribune. A short film version with Sidney Poitier was shown to acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival and Jacqueline Kennedy read the book to her youngsters in the White House. In Stoddard’s own words, The Thinking Book “is about daydreaming…a lighthearted celebration of a young child’s colorful imaginings… an intimate learning experience for tense, literal-minded and super-critical adults.”
